What Makes A Good OKR?

OKRs (Objectives & Key Results) are one of the best ways to structure goals for any team. But setting up an objective and key results plan can seem daunting, especially if you’ve never done this before.

In this article we’ll show you how to set up OKRs for your team, step by step. We’ll walk through each piece of the process — from defining objectives to writing down key results—and give examples along the way.

Before you start planning out your objectives, you’ll need to define them. Defining objectives is one of the easiest parts of the whole process, and there are several techniques you can use to choose the right ones. In fact, a lot of the choices you make during this stage will directly impact your ability to create strong key results.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when choosing objectives:

• Choose one or two broad objectives per person. Choosing too many narrow objectives can lead to confusion, and it’s difficult to measure success across multiple goals.

• Make sure every objective reflects a clear goal that someone within your team could achieve. Don’t choose objectives that require skills that no one in your team has yet mastered.

• Avoid using “weasel words” like ‘should’ or ‘could’. These terms leave room for interpretation and don’t allow for accountability. Instead, choose objectives that clearly communicate what needs to happen.

Next, choose key results. Once you know what you want your team members to accomplish, you’ll have to decide what sort of progress you want to see toward these objectives. Here are some common ways to measure progress:

1. Percentage of work completed

2. Number of hours worked

3. Metrics such as page views, number of downloads, or number of customers
